RZSS Edinburgh Zoo is home to the only giant pandas in the UK. The female is called Tian Tian (Sweetie) and the male is Yang Guang (Sunshine). Both pandas have identical, but separate, enclosures as giant pandas are entirely solitary animals that only meet once a year during the breeding season. The outdoor enclosures feature tree trunks for the pandas to scratch against and climb; large wooden climbing frames and tree houses; caves and ponds.
Penguins Rock – The main pool is Europe’s largest outdoor penguin pool at 65 metres long and 3.5 metres deep at its deepest point, containing 1.2 million litres of water. The new enclosure features lowered perimeters to help make visitors feel closer to the birds. Enhanced viewing areas have also been created with interactive interpretation using feathers, nesting rings, parasols and eggs. Mock sandy beaches and rocky areas add great visual touches, but also provide the birds with different textures that are perfect for their feet. Visitors can also see the birds have fun with a beautiful stone waterfall feature, a water shoot in the shallow end of the pool, and a diving board made out of carved rock.
